Between cities
Fly if the clock matters, take the sleeper if the journey is part of the holiday.
Information changes. Times, prices and ways of doing things are a guide only.
Domestic flights are cheap and quick — Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Phuket is 60–90 minutes with Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion or Thai Vietjet. Most low-cost departures are from Don Mueang, not Suvarnabhumi. Check which airport your ticket says.
Trains are slow and wonderful. The overnight sleeper Bangkok–Chiang Mai in a second-class air-conditioned berth is a genuinely good night's sleep and saves a hotel. Book on the State Railway site or the D-Ticket app, 1–30 days ahead; the good berths go early in high season.
Buses and minivans reach everywhere. VIP overnight coaches from Mo Chit are comfortable. Minivans are faster, cheaper and much less comfortable, and are driven accordingly.
