Hospitals, costs and insurance

Thai private healthcare is excellent, fast and cheap by EU standards. Your Bulgarian EHIC does not work here — there is no reciprocal agreement.

Internationally accredited private hospitals: Bumrungrad and Samitivej (Bangkok), Bangkok Hospital (nationwide), Chiang Mai Ram, Bangkok Hospital Phuket. English is standard; Bulgarian is not, but interpreters can be arranged.

Insurance: local Thai plans start around ฿20,000/year② for a healthy 35-year-old with inpatient cover; international expat policies with outpatient and evacuation run €900–2,500/year. Read the motorbike and adventure-sport exclusions carefully.

Pharmacies, vaccines and emergencies

Pharmacies sell most medication without a prescription, including antibiotics — which does not mean you should self-prescribe them. Bring your own supply of anything unusual, with the original box and prescription.

No vaccinations are required for entry from Bulgaria. Recommended: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus; rabies if you will be rural or cycling; Japanese encephalitis for long rural stays. Dengue has no vaccine you can rely on — use repellent.

Emergency numbers: 1669 ambulance · 191 police · 1155 Tourist Police (English). Save them now.
